Four Student Dormitories

YNU provides 4 dormitories with a total of more than 600 rooms for international students. The rent costs between 10,500 and 47,500 yen per month. Some dormitories allow international students to extend their stay for the second year and beyond, and have a limited number of rooms for married couples and families.

02.Central Library

Central Library

Open and comfortable environments in the central library guarantee effective reading and studies. With roughly 710,000 books and 1,200 seats, the library is also used as a multi-functional space equipped with a common learning space, a working studio, a media hall, a cafe and other facilities. There are two other libraries on campus: the Social Science Library and the Science and Technology Library.

03.Student Center

Student Center

The center provides one-stop services for consultation and applications regarding scholarships, tuition exemption, dormitories, visa renewal, extracurricular activities, exchange programs, job hunting, and so forth. In addition, automated certificate issuing machines are available for obtaining various certificates. Students can also use “Nandemo Sodan Shitsu” (the all-round support service).

YNU organizes career guidance, company research seminars, a job interview course, company information sessions, and other events for international students who wish to find employment in Japan. Our career support room provides individual career consultation services aside from posting company information sessions and job offers from companies. Cafeterias and Food Shops

There are 3 cafeterias on campus: Cherche, Cafeteria 1 (Renga Kan) and Cafeteria 2 (College of Engineering Science Cafeteria), providing nutritious and affordable meals for students and staff members of YNU. Meals can also be bought at a cafe, University Cooperative (CO-OP), a convenience store, and food trucks.

06.Respect for Culture & Religion

Cultural and Religious Considerations

YNU respects the religious beliefs of its students. CO-OP has a Halal foods section offering pre-cooked meals such as canned soup, pot noodles and retort pouch curry. Also, Cafeteria 2 serves Halal meals. If students want to pray, there is a prayer room available on campus.

University Hall

This welfare facility is available for use by YNU students, staff, and faculty. It has a meeting room, a hall, and Japanese-style rooms that can be used for student club activities, research presentations, music groups, and other activities. It also has a cafeteria-style dining room (Cherche) and a university students' cooperative (CO-OP) that sells books, stationery, and commodities. This facility helps you lead a fulfilling life at university.

Central Park

Outdoor activities such as concerts and theatrical performances by students are held in Central Park. During the university festival, a special stage is set up in the middle where various events take place. On regular days, you can see students eating lunch on the grass and basking in the sun.

In addition to a large 310-person capacity conference room, it also has a medium-sized conference room and small conference room that can be used for open lectures, symposiums, seminars, and other activities. The Japanese speech contest for international students is also held here. It also contains the YNU Museum.

10.Information Technology Service

Information Technology Service Center

This center is responsible for the development of the campus information network and IT-related educational environment, maintenance of security, and support for education and research. In particular, it has 900 computers for educational use and 16 color printers, and it provides services such as a class support system to deliver class materials and collect reports.

11.Health Service

Center for Health Service Science

This center provides emergency care in the event of an injury or sudden illness and refers patients to a medical institution when needed. In addition, it also offers mental health consultations from a psychiatrist or counselor, routine health checks twice a year, and health check certificates for job recruitment, applying for further education, or carrying out practical education work.

International Student Center

This center carries out Japanese language and Japanese culture education for international students of the University, runs the short-term study abroad international program, and holds classes for subjects that Japanese students and international students take together. It also offers consultations for international students and consultations and information for Japanese students who want to study abroad.

Student Advisory Service

This is a service for students to freely request advice on points that are difficult or unclear in student life. Staff and specialist faculty can give advice about academics, health, career paths, friends, or any aspect of daily life and will help you think of solutions. Of course, all consultations are strictly confidential. The service is on the second floor of the student center.

YNU has a gymnasium (with arena, judo hall, kendo hall, dance room, training room), athletic field, baseball field, tennis courts, swimming pool, football field, futsal field, archery field, Japanese archery field, and other athletic facilities. They are mostly used for gym classes in the regular curriculum, but students are actively encouraged to use them for voluntary extracurricular activities, and the exercise facilities and shared club facilities are fully equipped.

Club and society activities are a part of the activities that color university life. At YNU, there are over 40 sports-related groups and 40 cultural groups, and many students including international students actively participate.

16.“Tutor” System

“Tutor” (Student Supporter) System

Senior Japanese or international students serve as “tutors” for newly admitted international students to provide the necessary support for daily life and studying Japanese and other specialized subjects. In this manner, students who are not yet fluent in Japanese or those who are living abroad for the first time can start a new campus life without any worries.

Every year, YNU sends about 50 students to partner universities around the world through exchange programs. International undergraduate and graduate students (except for Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship students) can also participate in such exchanges. Aside from student exchange programs, YNU also organizes various short-term overseas study programs.

Study Tours for International Students

YNU organizes a few study tours a year for international students to deepen their understanding about Japan. Participants can visit a variety of famous historic places including world heritage sites, and facilities such as a beer factory and an automobile manufacturing plant. They can also gain rich cultural experiences by trying such things as zen meditation and indigo dyeing.

19.Japanese Language and Culture

Free Japanese Language and Culture Courses

At YNU, any international students can take courses on Japanese language and culture free of charge. Students can study Japanese based on their proficiency level and objectives, as we offer a wide variety of courses in six proficiency levels from beginner to advanced, as well as courses to gain specific skills in conversation, writing, kanji proficiency, etc. These courses are a great way to get to know other international students from various countries and programs.

20.105 & ISL

105 and International Student Lounge

At YNU, officially recognized student support groups “105” and the “International Student Lounge (ISL)” provide support in studies (proofreading, preparing for exams, etc.) and various procedures at the university. In addition, welcome parties, BBQ parties, international food parties, and many other events are organized to stimulate exchange among international and Japanese students.

21.Global Alumni Network

YNU Overseas Alumni Associations

As of April 2019, YNU has an alumni network covering 22 countries and 26 regions. YNU international graduates having returned to their countries, Japanese alumni living abroad, current students, and YNU staff members can deepen their bond and cooperation through information exchange and alumni events beyond national borders and their own fields of expertise.

As of November 2018, 1,045 international students from 76 countries are enrolled at YNU. As there are many international student groups, new students can interact with senior international students from the same country or culture. 23.Job Recruitment Promotion Program

International Students Job Recruitment Promotion Program

In 2017, YNU submitted a proposal for the International Students Job Recruitment Promotion Program, a public project for Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in collaboration with Yokohama City University, and the proposal was chosen. Both universities will collaborate with Kanagawa Prefecture, Yokohama City, financial groups, and international exchange groups to expand Japanese language education, career education, and internships. Through these activities, support for international students wishing to work in Japan will be further strengthened.

25.International Student Net

YNU International Student Net

YNU runs “isynu-net,” a mailing list service for YNU international students. Students who join the mailing list can receive e-newsletters (published at irregular intervals) with information about on- and off-campus events, exchange information, job recruitment guidance information, and more. 26.Individual Japanese support

Individual Japanese language support from community volunteers

Some community volunteer organizations outside of the university such as the Kanagawa SGG (KSGG) club and the Friendship Association for International Students and Japanese Volunteers (RKK) offer Japanese language study support with personal tutors and other types of Japanese language support. Also, various events are held to introduce Japanese culture to international students. Students who are interested should check the bulletin board at the International Student Center after coming to YNU.

Free OS and software

YNU has signed a group license agreement with Microsoft that lets students install the latest version of Microsoft Office (Office 365 ProPlus) for free on their own computers and use it for the duration of their time at YNU. YNU has also purchased a dedicated university website license for the Trend Micro virus buster program so that it can be installed for free on any computer brought on campus.

The YNU Connect friendship association offers diverse student support through cooperation with alumni active in Japan and other countries, such as career education classes with alumni as guest teachers, contests to plan or develop apps, and discussion meetings for past and current students to interact.

29.Bicycle Sharing Service

Bicycle Sharing Service “Cogoo”

This bicycle sharing service was launched to help students travel comfortably around the campus each day. There are 70 bicycles at eight stations around the campus that are free for students, staff, and faculty to use with membership registration. Bicycles can be borrowed, returned, locked, and unlocked from your smartphone.

30.Nihon Ryugaku Awards

Nihon Ryugaku Awards

As one of the destination that teachers of Japanese language schools would recommend to international students, YNU was nominated for the Award for National and Public Universities in East Japan for four consecutive years from 2015, and won the gold prize in 2017 and 2018. YNU was nominated for the Award for Graduate Schools in East Japan for two consecutive years from 2017, and won the gold prize in 2018. Going forward, YNU will continue to reinforce support to international students.
