As one of YNU’s International Special Programs of 2015, the Summer Intensive English Camp was held at California State University, Monterey Bay, in the U.S. for 24 days from August 29 to September 21. The Summer Intensive English Camp aimed at enhancing YNU student’s English proficiency. In addition, the camp sought to understand the American society, living and culture more deeply through homestays and activities in the community.

YNU students participating in the camp took English classes with other university’s students from Japan. All of them worked hard on presentations in those classes. As activities of the camp, they went to a variety of popular spots such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, famers’ market and even to San Francisco.
One of the most impressive experiences for the participating students was home-staying. All of them had a homestay with American families. They had many opportunities to improve English communicative competence through playing and chatting with their host families. They spent weekends on communicating with their host families in a friendly atmosphere. It seemed that home-staying provided them with very different experiences from staying at dormitory.

As an organizer of this Summer Intensive English Camp at California State University, Monterey Bay, YNU expects that this valuable three-week experience will give the students more interest in studying abroad and participating in the YNU Exchange Programs (6-month or one-year program).
